With the engine on and in drive though, the power to spin the wheel can only come from the transmission so either its parasitic drag turning the driveshaft (an abnormal amount?) or there is something causing engagement (half speed engagement?) of the front driveshaft in 2wd. Interestingly when one wheel turns only the driveshaft turns the other wheel doesnt. If I turn the driveshaft, both wheels turn. Anyways, I couldnt figure out where this noise is coming from. Every single one of my brake pads make a hissing sound from the rubbing to the brake disc. 2 of them make this noise unevenly while the other always make. Step 1. Step one requires unbolting the bolts that are holding the drive shaft. You need to remove the driveshaft to perform a drive shaft repair on your vehicle. The driveshaft is usually held by four bolts on each side. Once you remove the driveshaft, you can focus on removing the universal joint. When it's locked or unlocked it spins just the axel shaft but not the drive shaft. It's been making a grinding/slipping noise when in 4 wheel under heavy load. Im going to replace the locking hubs but I'm wondering if there is a bigger issue here. When the hubs are locked and you spin either wheel should the drive shaft spin with it?.

Sounds like either the yoke come loose or a busted axle, if you didn't pull the axle shafts out, you can't rule them out. If the splines are well seated in teh spiders the wheel will still turn with the rear end off teh ground, but if theres a small fracture, it can spin under load and you may not be able to tell without pulling the shafts. I spin the wheels forward and the driveshaft moves with them. The passenger wheel does not spin the drivers wheel but the drivers wheel spins the passenger wheel (Or could be the other way around). I can't remember which side does which but anyhow it seemed like the wheels were linked properly. I did notice the wheels didn't spin THAT easily.

Only show this user. With the vehicle in park and raised with the rear completely off the ground, the DRIVESHAFT should be locked up by the parking pin and should NOT spin. The only reason they spin now is because the wheels are attached to the axles, and that makes the front diff spin, which makes the drive shaft spin.... even though the actuators are not engaged, still causing the front drive shaft to spin some what due to friction, but not as much as when the vehicle is in 4wd. One half shaft could still be viable and the broken one can spin with no resistance on it, however, once it's on the ground it won't spin because you don't have a positive connection between the gear set and the axle. It is an internal fault and you'll have to tear it down.

Front drive shaft spins, interaxle doesnt. If he had a broken front axle, power goes down the driveshaft and then to the broken front axle. Truck doesnt move, interaxle doesnt turn. If he then locks the power divider that means 1 axle on the front must turn and one axle on the rear must turn. Re: Drive shaft spins but truck won't move. When put in 4x4 it still would not move. The rear drive shaft and front axels were spinning. Sounds like your front hubs are not locked. If the rear drive shaft is spinning and your truck is not moving you may have a broken axle or a problem with the rear end gears. The driveshaft is perpendicular to the rear axle, so the power must be somehow diverted from the perpendicular driveshaft to the horizontal axle; a differential accomplishes this by connecting two rods with gears on the end to a gear on the end of the driveshaft. As the driveshaft turns, so too does the differential, spinning the wheels. If you're just replacing a half-shaft for your front wheel drive car, then it will cost anywhere from $470 to $940. You can expect the parts cost to be anywhere from $320 to $750, while the labor costs are only around $150 to $190. A driveshaft is a cylindrical shaft that transmits torque from the engine to the wheels. They are most commonly found on rear-wheel drive vehicles and connect the rear of the transmission to the driveshaft. As the output shaft of the transmission rotates it spins the driveshaft, which then turns the differential ring gear to rotate the wheels.

Remove the spark plugs..With the bike on the rear stand , shift the bike to 6 th gear and rotate the rear wheel. It should rotate with some effort because there is no compression. Should the front driveshaft roll free by hand if 4x4 is off??.

Turn the wheel TWO revolutions and count the number of driveshaft turns. The number of driveshaft rotations will help you determine your rear axle ratio. For example, if it turned 3 and a half times, it's a 3.50:1 ratio. If it turned 4 and a quarter times, it's a 4.25:1 ratio. For better accuracy, turn the wheel 20 times and divide by 2 for. By the way, be aware that with the driveshaft locked by being in 4WD, and one wheel locked by being on the ground, the wheel you are turning may not be the one whose hub is turning. It could be the hub on the other side turning in the opposite direction. Be sure to watch the axle half-shafts when figuring out whats going on. The wheels spin, but I cannot get the drive shafts to spin. When I get under the car, I shake and shake them, but they won't budge.
